Accurate field area measurement is one of the key tasks in modern agriculture. Proper data directly affects crop planning, fertilizer application, land management, and overall farm efficiency.

Today, instead of rough estimates, modern GNSS technologies are used, allowing you to obtain precise results directly in the field.

One of such solutions is the GM SPIKE 2 GNSS receiver combined with the mobile application geometer SCOUT for Android.

In this article, we will explain how to properly measure field area and what to pay attention to in order to achieve the most accurate results.

How GNSS Field Area Measurement Works

The GM SPIKE 2 receiver simultaneously receives signals from multiple satellite systems: GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and BEIDOU. This ensures fast and highly accurate positioning.

The main advantage of the GM SPIKE 2 GNSS receiver is its fast response to movement. While walking around the field, the receiver does not lag behind, does not miss points, and instantly displays results in the application.

Measurement Accuracy

Under normal conditions:

  • accuracy is approximately 0.2% for fields from 1 hectare

  • for smaller areas, the error may be slightly higher

The accuracy depends on:

  • number of satellites

  • HDOP value

  • correct receiver placement

  • movement speed during measurement

Even a high-quality GNSS receiver can produce less accurate results if it is incorrectly positioned or used under unfavorable conditions.

Proper GNSS Receiver Placement

To achieve maximum accuracy, follow these recommendations:

✅ Place the receiver as high as possible

✅ Ensure a clear view of the sky

✅ Install the receiver level, in a horizontal position, without tilt

✅ Avoid nearby obstacles such as trees, buildings, and metal structures

Best placement options:

  • magnetic mount on the roof of a car or tractor

  • telescopic pole from 170 cm or higher

Not recommended: carrying the receiver in your pocket, holding it in your hand, or placing it at an angle — this can significantly reduce measurement accuracy.

How to Monitor Measurement Quality in geometer SCOUT

While using geometer SCOUT, it is important to monitor key parameters that affect the result:

  • GNSS status

  • number of satellites

  • HDOP value

  • battery level

📌 HDOP recommendations:

  • 0.5–0.6 — excellent

  • 0.7–0.8 — good

  • 0.8 or higher — possible reduced accuracy

If the HDOP value is too high, it is better to wait or change the receiver position.

GM SPIKE 2 LED Indicators

To quickly assess the status of the GM SPIKE 2, simply check its LED indicators.

1. GNSS Signal

  • white — sufficient satellites, ready for operation

2. Battery

  • green — 50–100% charge

  • red (blinking) — 20–50% charge

  • fast blinking — less than 20%

  • charging — blinking green

  • fully charged — solid green

3. Bluetooth

  • blinking blue — waiting for connection

  • solid blue — connected

The combination of GM SPIKE 2 and geometer SCOUT provides a simple, convenient, and accurate solution for field area measurement.

With proper receiver setup and monitoring of key parameters, you get fast results, high accuracy, and a smooth workflow directly in the field.
